….in the University library! Every Wednesday I spend the day back in the Edinburgh Uni library in between school drop off and pick up for my daughter.
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my days here and thought I might share some of the things I’ve learned (through a mixture of experience, Google and evesdropping!) since I mixed my work venue up a little bit.
Each floor in the Edinburgh Uni main library is over an acre in size (something many of you can relate to I’m sure)
It was built in 1967 and, at the time, it was the biggest university library in the UK
I studied here so long ago that my details (student number – which I can still remember - etc.) had all been archived!
But other things never change. Aside from a huge quote on the wall (see image!) which was installed in 2018 by artist Nathan Coley, the rest of the library LOOKS exactly as it did 20 plus years ago!
Students these days do not call their final thesis a dissertation. No, that’s far too long a word. These days, it’s called a Diss. Who knew?!
Sitting in a quiet place surrounded by other silent people really is a recipe for better concentration and more productivity. I highly recommend it!
Edinburgh, and in particular The Meadows, is really beautiful. How did I spend four years studying here and not properly look out of the window and appreciate what I saw?
We all need to work harder to make recycling easier. The library has literally hundreds of colour coded bins for recycling every imaginable object, it’s very impressive. I think that even more public and private spaces should be doing more of this.
