...Living Explorer. Sir Ranulph Fiennes. What a man – and I was lucky enough to be near the front in the big tent at the Fringe by the Sea to hear him speak about his 78 years of adventure. I paraphrase a little but, having been so inspired by his words, I wanted to share some of them with you.
You can always go a little bit further. You might not be quite sure where the end is, or how you are going to get all that way, but you can always just keep going a little bit further and inch your way towards that final destination one step at a time
Be patient. Having spent seven years planning an expedition and then three years undertaking it, Sir Ran knows about the waiting game. Success isn’t always instant but if you put enough planning in you’re more likely to be successful
Apparently, it was Sir Ranulph who coined the phrase “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”. I’m not sure all farmers would agree with that statement, but the meaning behind it is hard to argue with, and of course, it all comes back to preparation again
Don’t cry over spilt milk – learn from failures and then keep going
Choose members of your team based on character rather than skills – you can teach skills. Look at what motivates people and keeps them going even when times are tough
Love hard – because you never know what’s around the corner and who you might lose
