Third-generation, family-run West Coast butchers, McCaskie’s has once again been recognised for the superior quality and range of its produce, winning ‘Scotch Product of the Year’ with its Unsmoked Back Bacon in this year’s Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards, Scotland’s food and drink ‘Oscars’. McCaskie Scotch Native Breed Sirloin Steak also reached the final in the same category.
The annual awards, which took place last night (Thursday) in front of 800 people at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh, recognise the highest quality produce and focus on the standout products driving value, quality and consumer choice in the Scottish market. They received a record number of entries this year, with 320 entries across the categories, making the competition tougher than ever.
Nigel Ovens, owner of McCaskie Butchers, is now able to add this newest accolade to numerous other titles and award wins, most notably as the producer of Scotland’s Most Awarded Haggis and Scotland’s Most Awarded Black Pudding.
On his win, Nigel Ovens said,
“We are so delighted to have won this prestigious award for ‘Scotch Product of the Year’ with our unsmoked back bacon. With so much competition this year, it is testament to our hard-working team and to my family with whom I run the business.
“We’re extremely proud of our heritage and being a traditional family business specialising in quality meat and meat products.
“As with all McCaskie products, our bacon range is hand produced in small batches in order that we can ensure premium quality control. Our bacon only uses 100% Scottish Specially Selected Pork and our cure is made to a special recipe which has been passed down through the generations. The end result is a supremely tasty bacon! Our bacon sells really well across the counter in our shop in Wemyss Bay, but we also sell it throughout the country via our website and to a number of Scotland's top restaurants.
“I am so proud to be taking a Scotland Food & Drink trophy home on my first visit to these awards and can’t wait for more people to taste our winning bacon!”
